5 Things You Should Never Throw in Your Regular Trash

We all know the basics of recycling and trash disposal, but some items are surprisingly dangerous — or even illegal — to toss in your regular curbside bin. If you’ve been storing old junk in your garage or basement because you’re not sure how to get rid of it, you’re not alone.

Here are five common items that should never go in your regular trash — and what to do with them instead.

1. Old Appliances (Refrigerators, Freezers, AC Units)

Appliances that contain refrigerants like Freon are regulated by the EPA. Tossing them in the trash can release harmful chemicals into the atmosphere and result in fines. Many older appliances also contain oils and heavy metals that contaminate landfills.

What to do: Schedule a professional junk removal service. At Smart Junk Removal PDX, we ensure appliances are disposed of in compliance with all environmental regulations.

2. Mattresses and Box Springs

Oregon banned mattresses from landfills in many jurisdictions because they take up enormous space and are difficult to compact. They can also harbor mold and pests if left in open dumps. Most garbage trucks won’t even pick them up curbside.

What to do: We haul mattresses every day across Portland, Gresham, Beaverton, and the surrounding metro area. We’ll recycle the components whenever possible.

3. Construction Debris and Remodel Waste

Drywall, lumber with nails, concrete, roofing shingles, and other construction materials don’t belong in residential bins. Many contain chemicals that need special handling, and the sheer weight can damage collection trucks.

What to do: After your next renovation or DIY project, call Smart Junk Removal PDX for fast, affordable construction debris removal. We sort and recycle what we can.

4. Tires

It’s illegal to throw tires in the regular trash in Oregon. They don’t decompose, they trap methane gas in landfills, and they become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Most waste haulers will flat-out refuse them.

What to do: We accept tires as part of our full-service junk removal. We’ll make sure they get to a certified tire recycler.

5. Paint, Chemicals, and Hazardous Materials

Leftover paint cans, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, and cleaning chemicals are classified as household hazardous waste. Pouring them down drains contaminates water supplies, and putting them in the trash can cause fires or chemical reactions in garbage trucks.

What to do: Check with Metro’s hazardous waste facility for free drop-off events, or call us to haul away everything else that’s cluttering up your garage.
